Phase 3
3a: DEVELOPING AN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Background Information
In PHASE 1, I identified the learning issue as low reading fluency with a group of fifth grade students at Sunset Elementary. I also explained my technology based solution would be the use of iPad to increase reading fluency skills. The I chose is Read With Me by Sleek-geek.

In PHASE 2, I described objectives and assessments that go along with my technology based solution.
Implementation Plan
Students from identified group will be pulled out during allotted time one at a time twice a week. Each student will go to a student center room which they will be one on one monitored by the teacher. Students will open the app, adjust the text size, press record and perform the one minute fluency test.
By using video recording feature on the iPad app, students will increase focus and determination to improve reading skills. Students can also perform this task while in student centers in the classroom. One instructional strategy is for the students to assess each other. One student can read the passage to another student who will take notes on a paper print out of the passage of what they heard incorrect. They can also time each other. Since Kevin and Reese work well together, and Savannah and Jake are friends these are great groups. After both students have finished reading, they can share with each other what they thought were challenging words.
I will provide each student with a visual chart of strategies to use while practicing. (See below)
Some of the strategies include rereading the word. Students should ask themselves: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? If not, they should stop, go back and read it again. (Hudson, 2007.)
Timeline
Students will be pulled out their social studies and science class twice for two weeks for a total of four sessions. I am working along side their reading intervention teacher. Each session will last approximately 20 minutes.
Students will reread the same passage on the second session. Assessments will be compared to see if improvement has happened. One the second week, we will try a different passage at an increased reading level.
I have received parent email addresses and will share results via the Read With Me app. I will also share with parents how they can access the app and passages at home. If they don't have an iPad at home available, they can access Read With Me via internet.

Meeting diverse needs
Kevin and and Jake have vision issues. With the app, you are able to increase the text size as big as you need it. All four identified students have instructional accommodations present in their IEPs. They all have a human reader provided for assessments. Since this assessment is specific to the ability to decode, no reader will be provided. Students however will be monitored while reading and assistance will be provided if the student gets stuck on a particular word. All four also have a Setting accommodation where the teacher is to reduce distractions to the student. This will be achieved by going to the student center in the special ed room which is located next to their classroom.
3b: Preparing the Environment
Technology materials
Our school has several iPad carts including the 5th grade cart which holds 30 iPads, one MacBook Pro which has loaded the Read With Me app on all of the iPads. The Mac laptop also serves as a good tool to evaluate fluency assessments. Students have provided their own set of headphones for audio and video playback of their readings. The app has preloaded reading passages from all different reading levels. I have also copied and pasted passages into the app from the Treasures assessments that are available online. Students will use the app in student centers in the regular classroom as well as get pulled out during their reading intervention times. All passages will be printed out as well as a backup if there is an issue with the iPads.
Access plan
The iPad cart will be available to each student. There is already a standard routine in place for the use of iPads in school. Students are not permitted to access any other app or function without permission of the teacher. They will take the app from the cart, sit at the appropriate student center. They will be given a QR code in which they are to scan to access the appropriate reading passage. Once they see their face on the camera, they are to press record and begin the assessment. Students will vision impairments can control the size of the font. Once finished, the will place iPads back in the cart and return to their class or where their teacher instructs them to go.

Sample Reading
Basketball is a very popular sport. It can be played at school, in parks and homes. All a player needs is a hoop, a ball, a backstop, and a hard floor. People practice for hours to become good players.
Basketball is more than just bouncing a ball and making baskets. Players need to be fast thinkers. They have to know when to make a pass and when to shoot. They also have to be in great physical shape.
Team play is also important. The best teams know how to work together to win. Teams have to have good defense, too. It doesn't matter if a team can make a lot of baskets if it lets other teams do the same to them. A good defense can often win the game. Blocking a shot and getting a rebound are some ways the defense can help the team out.
Many kids these days want to become basketball players when they grow up. They dream of one day scoring the winning basket at the finals. They wish that one day they get chosen to play for their favorite team. But to make it as a professional it takes a lot of hard work. Basketball players need to get good grades in school to stay on the team. Most players also go to college where they get to play and get noticed by the pros. So if you are serious about basketball, study and get good grades, and practice!

logistics plan
With any technology use, you must be prepared for something to not go as planned. With this app, it is fully functional while connected to the internet. If the Wi-Fi is down, there is an offline function where students can still perform the reading assessment, but it only saves the audio of the assessment. Students can also access their assessment on a regular computer (they could go to the computer lab). The computer version does not have an audio or video recording function but does provide a timer and comprehension questions afterwards.
In the case of the iPads not correctly functioning, I will have the passages printed out ahead of time for the students to practice with. I will also include a comprehension worksheet to go along with the fluency check.
